JOHN MILLARD

I'm a library geek with wide ranging interests in the ways people interact with the digital world. Professionally, I'm an Assistant Dean with the Miami University Libraries with Leadership oversight of a newly reorganized division consisting of new Create & Innovate, Advise & Instruct and Access & Borrow departments supporting learning, research, creative innovation, and intellectual access to the Libraries digital and physical collections.

I'm a graduate of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with a Master of Science in Library and Information Science. Prior to that, I completed a Master of Science in Recreation Park and Tourism emphasizing Outdoor Environmental Education and a Bachelor of Business in Information Resources Management, both from Western Illinois University.

I joined Miami University in Oxford OH as an electronic information services librarian in 1995 followed by assignments as Geographic Information Systems Librarian and digital initiatives librarian. Prior to joining the Libraries senior leadership team, I led a talented team of professionals to create the Libraries' Center for Digital Scholarship and served as its first department head.

My research interests and activities focus on developing digital library systems to serve distinct user communities. I'm a former NASA and USGS funded investigator working for the OhioView project, a congressionally sponsored project to further the use of U.S. civilian satellite data by the public. I recently completed the Scholars Dashboard, an IMLS funded project, with colleague Elias Tzoc that leverages cloud computing platforms to quickly deploy online tools on-demand to support faculty and student projects.

From a higher education perspective, I'm also interested in leadership development in Academic Libraries and in the central role that Libraries can play in the life of the University.
